It’s Showtime in Glenwood Springs!
Leave the drama to the professionals; attend a theater show in Glenwood Springs! Whether you prefer lots of laughs, Shakespearean tragedies, improv, standup or big musicals, Glenwood’s stages are riveting audiences with masterful talent.
Back in Shakespeare’s day, the Bard himself would tell you that theater performances were intended for one and all. Queens and carpenters alike attended his shows at the Globe Theatre in London. Audiences came to be entertained—to laugh and cry; see characters overcome their fate or succumb to it, witness struggles and triumphs play out on a stage—all still valid reasons to “take in a show” 400 years later.
The town in the mountains known for its hot springs and outdoor recreation also happens to be a cultural center that welcomes visitors to be entertained. If you haven’t been to a show in a while, take the opportunity on your next Glenwood Springs vacation to sit down in a darkened playhouse. As the curtain goes up, watch the drama (or comedy) of life unfold right before your eyes in one of these great venues:
Glenwood Vaudeville Revue. Hilarious, silly and clever are a few of the adjectives used to describe this rollicking family-friendly show featuring skits, jokes and song and dance numbers. For an evening of side-splitting laughs that appeals to all ages, the Glenwood Vaudeville Revue is must-see entertainment. The venue also periodically spotlights special events such as musical theater productions, comedy nights and concerts. Set up as a dinner theater, the cast also serves up dinner, drinks and dessert before shows and during intermission. Fridays and Saturdays, doors open at 6 p.m.; Sundays at 5 p.m.
Riviera Supper Club & Piano Bar. The landmark restaurant with the roofline neon sign is co-owned by Jonathan Gorst—former musical director and principal conductor for the national tours of Cats and Phantom of the Opera. Along with fine dining, the restaurant features nightly live music— usually from 7 to 9 p.m.—and sporadic special events such as murder mystery dinners and musically themed evenings! The “Riv” is also home to an extensive wine list of over forty selections by the glass.
Sopris Theatre Company at Colorado Mountain College. Students, community members and theater professionals produce three to five major shows per year that span the spectrum from Shakespeare to Sondheim and Moliere to Miller. Shows take place at the New Space Theatre at the Spring Valley Campus. Past productions have included: One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Uncle Vanya, The Miracle Worker and Proof.
Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park Melodrama. Boo, hiss and swoon along with the show’s over-the-top heroes, heroines and villains at America’s only mountain-top theme park. Characters are saddled with ‘punny’ names like Jenna Rosity, Avery Braveman and Dee Zaster. Audience participation is highly encouraged during this Old West melodrama that’s guaranteed to delight every member of the family.
